You will also see bottles referred to as High Proof Tequila, which means they are bottled at a higher proof than the typical 80 proof. Anything above 80 proof can be considered high proof. Ultimately, high proof has been diluted. For the most authentic taste of what a distiller wants their Tequila to represent, go for the Still Strength. The highest proof a tequila can legally be and still be labeled Tequila is 110 proof. This regulation is established by the Mexican NOM (Norma Oficial Mexicana) and the CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila). Tequila can be made above 110 proof, but can not be called Tequila.
